My main concern is being able to restore my server if one or both of the little drives fail or the little box goes up in flames. My current backup solution is, each of my macs now has an external drive with time machine enabled.
That will stay the same, however with more of the data living on the server, I want to make sure I have a rock solid way of backing up the server, and then restoring it quickly. I am thinking my setup will be, I share out my home dir on the MyBook, really important data is manually copied/backed up to another set of mirrored disks and is stored off site. I thought about mirroring the two 500GB drives as I don't need the storage. I read however that you can't use Time Machine to do a complete backup of your server because it does not backup the data, if this is the case, why even have it in the server edition? and/or using Time Machine to create a backup on an USB disk. Ideas please, and I thank you in advanced. It appears that the 10.6 time machine works a little different from the way it did in 10.5 (in advanced mode anyway - never used the now defunked simple or workgroup modes). I used it in 10.5 (for the mail store (only after stopping mail) and file share), but only for connected drives, never for the boot drive. It would back them up and not effect the the running of the server. I used CarbonCopy periodically to clone the boot disk. This worked slick and saved my bacon a few times. But when you turn on time machine in 10.6, it backs up the all the services, even if you deselect the boot disk. It first writes all the files to an invisible folder and then syncs that folder with the time machine disk. This doesn't work for me, since it creates this huge temp folder on boot disk, so I have moved to using Chronosync to back up the Service Data folder (running the appropriate scripts first to turn on and off services as needed.). I still use CarbonCopy to clone the boot disk once a week. You guys mention a whole bunch of backup solutions here. I'm setting up a Mini SL server too, and I was thinking of using TM and CCC OR SuperDuper! for backups. But since Private/var/spool/ isn't visible in Finder, how would I go around restoring a single mailbox or even a single mail lost from the IMAP store? Given that TM on SL server actually takes care of backing up services this should work great for backing up user data. Or do you guys always move the default service locations for mail to another location that is accessible through finder? As far as I have seen I can move the default location of ical server, wiki server, fileshares and mail from within Server Admin. SHOULD one always do this before populating the server with users and data? And does SL TM back up OD? If so, how do I restore OD without restoring the whole server?ġ. If you use Arq or any other "push" backup application, you should be aware that you'll have each machine you're backing up trying to simultaneously write to the same server drive. There was a thread on the Mac Ach a year or two ago in which the OP had discovered that, when backing up 15 or 20 Macs with TM to one server Mac, half of them weren't actually being backed up because they were "losing the fight". "Client-server" applications, which were developed before there were any affordable alternatives to a tape drive destination, generally back up one machine at a time in sequence. Have a few Macs in the house that used to back up to a Time Capsule until it died. Infrequent USB drive Time Machine backups since, and my wife's Mac Mini is now so stuffed it can't backup to the attached drive any more. How best to push the important files on the Macs over to a Windows share on a regular basis?
